Memorial Day at Home

Memorial Day is often a day off, filled with outdoor BBQs & pool time — one of the best ways to kick off summer; however, while some of us are still in quarantine and practicing social distancing it may be difficult to celebrate how we normally would.

But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t celebrate at all! There are many simple and creative ways to honor our veterans during this time and spread some positivity to those around us.

A Moment of Silence

On Memorial Day morning, instead of going about your work/errands after your cup of coffee, set aside some time to have a moment of silence for those who have given their lives to defend our country. You can do this with close family and friends over a video call or broaden the invite to friends and host a live session on a social media app.

Red, White and Blue

A thoughtful and friendly way to remind your neighbors of Memorial Day and let them know you’re thinking of veterans is to display a flag on your door or other red, white and blue decorations. If you do decide to fly a flag make sure to check the guidelines to ensure you’re following the right etiquette.

Craft a Poppy

If arts and crafts are more your thing you can craft a poppy with some paper to display anywhere in your home as remembrance.

To touch on some American history, poppies were the first flowers that started growing on American battlefields which is why it has become a tradition to make them on Memorial Day.

Give Back

Donations are a great way to make a difference and give back to those that provided for our country and their families. There are over 7,000 different organizations that support our veterans and their families including the Wounded Warrior Project.

Patriotic Baking

Although you may not be able to host a get together like you normally would, you can still bring a little bit of positivity to your home this Memorial Day by baking some delicious treats. Add some blueberries and/or strawberries to a dessert you would normally make to make it a little patriotic. For some ideas check out the Food Network’s favorite Memorial Day desserts.

This Memorial Day, we invite you to take time and reflect on what this day means and honor the memories of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice through small acts of kindness, and patriotism.
