Five Creative Ways to Get Active in 2019
We’ve all made our New Year’s resolution to work out more, and now it’s time to accomplish the goal that you’ve created for yourself. Whether it’s to lose 10 pounds, run a faster mile, or just improve your overall health, it’s important that you put a stimulating workout routine into place so you stay motivated. Going to the gym day after day can be tedious, which is why most people start to lose motivation and ultimately stop going. To stay on top of your 2019 fitness goals, it’s time to think outside of the box. Here are five creative ways to stay active this year.
Explore Colorado while Hiking
One of the best and most rewarding outdoor activities is hiking, and lucky for you, Boulder is home to some of the most beautiful trails. Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced hiker, the steep inclines will work your muscles and the continuous movement will keep your heart rate up for long periods of time. The best part? The breathtaking views you get to enjoy once you reach the top.

Try a New At Home Workout
Getting creative with your workouts means not even leaving your house to break a sweat! Find items around your home that are easy to grasp and weigh anywhere from 5 to 15 pounds each, depending on how much you are able to lift. Use the items to do curls, squats, and crunches. You can even use your furniture to your advantage, for example, a sturdy chair is great for step ups or in-place lunges.
A 45 Minute At-Home Workout to Get Your Heart Rate Up:
- 30 jumping jacks
- 15 push ups
- 25 high knees
- 10 burpees
- 10 crunches
- 10 squats
- 10 tricep dips
- 1-minute wall sit
- 1-minute plank
- 10 lunges
Get a Full Body Workout by Swimming
Swimming is a great full-body activity. It helps to build endurance, muscle strength, and keeps your heart rate up while taking some of the impact and stress off your body. If you’re not a big swimmer, there are plenty of other activities, such as water aerobics and various water workouts that you can try.

Refresh Your Routine with Yoga
Wake up your muscles and your mind by starting your day with a few yoga poses. Yoga helps to build muscle strength, especially your core, as well as improves flexibility and balance. Starting your day with a few yoga poses can help to relax your body and start your day with a positive mindset.

High-Intensity Interval Training
If your fitness goal is to build up your endurance or improve your overall health, or if you just like to break a sweat, try High-Intensity Interval Training. HIIT workouts help boost your metabolism and burn calories in a short period of time by alternating between high-intensity workouts and short resting periods. Incorporating HIIT workouts into your weekly workout schedule will consistently challenge you, and push you out of your comfort zone.

The best thing you can do to stay on top of your fitness goals is to make a plan and stick with it. Set a time each day to work out and hold yourself accountable. It’s important that you push through a workout even on the days when you’re tired or ‘not feeling like it’. Make weekend plans with your friends to try a new hike each week so it’s less of a workout and more of a get-together. The more fun (or challenging) you make your work out, the more rewarding it will be.
